As an introduction, and this may not be exactly correct, but in my mind the term “New Age", is derived from the idea of The Age of Aquarius. This idea denotes the processional change in the earth’s orientation of the visible zodiac. This movement into the sign Aquarius, suggests that humanity will actually start to behave like good humans.
“The Age” symbolically is a time in which humanity collectively cares about the needs of the people of the earth and of the earth itself, as compared to the age of Pisces, considered a time in which the earth was exploited and people were/are exploited for the benefit of a few.
Although there doesn’t seem to be a book telling us exactly what we shoud believe regarding this upcoming age. There does seem to be an unwritten list of concepts that many "new agers" seem to often share, and these ideas makes it easy for people to relate and connect with each other.
That list might include, but is not limited to the following items:
1) The importance of nature, and respect and interest in traditions that care for the well-being of the planet we depend upon. That we are apart of the natural world, and
we are connected to all things.
2) That we are whole beings and that even minor heath issues can suggest something can be out of balance not just physically but in other parts, including mind and spirit. Thus the term “holistic”.
3) There seems to be some kind of unifying force within the universe that actually is very practical in our daily lives. This is not clear cut, and as well defined as traditional religions. But many former church members discovered they can still experience spirituality, perhaps even more so, and perhaps in a much more personal way.
4) There is a kind of network that exist that seems to be related to this universal power, or unifying force. And this network seems to have certain operating principles.
5) Synchronicity seems to “rule”. Often things seem to “happen” without any typical prompting. Thoughts create responses, as if a thought can cause an event. This is evident in the so called Law of Attraction. Those things that we think about seem to come to us.
6) Being in the “now”. A very common theme, ancient as the Buddha, himself. Yet subject to endless books, and the realization that to be present in the moment” is not really all that easy(this should really be number one).
7) This unifying force allows healing via healing touch and mental intentions, similar to something called "prayer".
8) That we do live with certain principles, not within the rules of church or state, but that these ideas seem to be real on their own merit. Those principles might include, forgiveness, the golden rule, and the idea that humanity is “family”. As an Astrologer, I can easily see that humanity is not separate from nature. And this is reflected in each birth chart.
